Hi all! I have a little news…
We took Chris to pick out his choice of rodent on Saturday for his birthday. (Since we lost our dear hamster ‘Twister’ in October, (I mean, he died, he’s not lost in the basement somewhere!)) Chris chose two dwarf hamsters. He wanted a boy and a girl so they could mate and have babies! But, decided on two boys when I explained that I didn’t want to have a million baby hamsters! There were two cages of hamsters and unfortunately there was only one male in each cage and you can't mix hamsters from different cages, otherwise they will fight. So, he chose two girls, one white and one brown with a white belly (think deer). He named them Sugar and Spice! He bought them a pink ball to roll around in and a pink car to play in and drove a hard bargain for a pink cage too, at which we drew the line, Since unbeknownst to him, Grandma had already bought him the super cool, space themed habitrail cage he had been asking for.
Once we got our little bundles home and all set up, we put the cage on the table and sat to watch the games ensue… until I noticed something amiss. It looked like a worm, a very short fat red worm. A baby!! I flipped out… called the pet shop and got all the instructions! Unfortunately one of the instructions was to cover the cage and leave them alone for 24 hours!! What!!!! I can’t watch!!! Chris gets new hamsters for his birthday and can’t even watch them!!??
So much for no baby hamsters...the pet store said there could be anywhere from 2-14 babies!
Well, there are three babies in there as of today. There is still a chance they may not all survive, however, Sugar Mama and Auntie Spice have been amazing at keeping them warm and hidden. I have spent hours sitting by the cage with my book just to get a glimpse of the little family. We have had very limited baby sightings (mostly by lifting the cage and peering into the bottom) but today they moved the babies up into the enclosed wheel on top of the cage and I was able to watch her clean them. It was not easy to see, I kept seeing feet and bottoms but not whole babies.
Chris is not sure he will want to part with any of the hamsters, yet if they are all boys… I’m really not sure I will allow him to keep them. The plan was to keep one girl and give the ‘rest’ away. Depending on the genders of the bunch will determine how many we keep and how many will be shared with the long, long, line of people wanting one! This surprised me. My mom wants 2, Liz wants one, Cody wants one etc.
Chris decided we should breed them…. He told me he would charge Liz 50 cents then immediately decided a $1.00 would be better…!
Keep in mind… we bought two female hamsters. Their gestation is 16 days. Until we have had Auntie Spice for 2 weeks with no ‘weight gain’ there is no guarantee she is not going to give us more little miracles!
Chris informed me that I am now a Great Grandma! All I could think of is that we finally have
babies in the house!! Triplets no less! And of course… December birthdays!
